I realized I havent done many product reviews. I dont feel like I can give a thorough review of a product unless I have used it for a long period and even tried alternatives to make it work. I just recently have learned to do my daughter's hair so I havent tried too many product lines. Since its been awhile, I will start with the very fist product and brand that I tried after learning about the bad ingredients and using all natural. The first hair care blog I ever found was Happy Girl Hair and because of her I decided to try out Darcy's Botanicals. It was my first "big splurge" I'm usually very cheap and I never in a million years would have thought id spend more than $5 on any hair product! I only chose two items because browsing through the site was very overwhelming, I was still learning and didn't fully understand the difference between leavin-in, pomade, butter etc. I bought the Vanilla Delight Daily Leave-In Conditioner and Organic Coconut Butter Styling Pomade. I love, love, love the Vanilla Delight leave-in and actually have used it all up. At first the smell was a little too weird and strong for me but I eventually got use to it. I would apply it immediately after she got out the shower and when it fully dried it would leave her curls so bouncy and defined. It never left it crunchy or hard. The consistency is light and milky so its easy to apply. The coconut pomade on the other hand I'm not so sure. Back then it was the only product I used. I would use it alone and I didn't really like the results. Since its mostly coconut oil it is really oily. It would moisturize her hair and then end up feeling really dry after. I actually purchased some Bee Mine after and once I used the luscious balanced moisturizer I put the coconut pomade up and I havent used it since. I may use it for her ends and mine as well. I tried to look on their website and they no longer have the vanilla delight but I will def buy some more of the leave-in when I have a chance. I believe its the best I have used so far. I had never even heard of Darcy's Botanicals until yesterday when Loveyourgirlsbiracialcurls told me about it. So, you are the second person in two days to recommend it... I may have to give it a try. I will add it to my never ending product wish list! ;-)
Fortunately, I did a LOT of research when B was born because I really wanted to make sure she had nice healthy hair. I did not want to be that stereotypical white mother with a biracial child that had unruly, unhealthy hair... LOL...
The very first products I bought were the It's a Curl line by Curls. I bought the shampoo, conditioner and moisturizer, and they generously send 3 good size samples with each order, so I was able to try other products also.
I don't use the It's a Curl now that B is older. We are now using Curly Q's or Mixed Chicks for our shampoo and deep conditioner and Mixed Chicks Leave-In for our styling/leave-in product...
Still looking for something to hold her curls a little more and prevent frizziness on top of the leave-in. I may go broke trying all these products!!! LOL I am like you ~ I would never have thought to spend the kind of money on my hair that I spend on B's... But, I guess that's what mommies do. :-)
I understand you 100%! I didn't know LYGBC even used DB! I have only used those 2 products but I really like the leave-in. It worked well for my daughter. For more reviews on DB you should check out Happy Girl Hair. I believe its one of the main brands she uses.
My hair is also straight and I'm very careless with it. I throw it up in a bun or ponytail and call it a day!
How does mixed chicks work for you? I've heard about them too but haven't gotten around to trying. Like you, I have a long list! I may try curls for my youngest.
I got use to the frizzies. I don't panic so much now that I see them. What helps us is the bee mine curly butter and ecostyler gel.
I love the Mixed Chicks leave-in on B's hair! It defines and hydrates her curls. They still tend to frizz up by the end of the day, but I think a lot of that is her age. She is a toddler who still naps so it is a given that she comes home from daycare with wild hair daily. LOL
