Natural Hair Carnival: Breast Cancer Awareness Month: How to- sock bun on natural hair

This month's hair carnival is in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Get ready to see styles with lots of pink in the linkies!

I wanted to braid the logo but we ended up with x's lol. We actually did several styles and was unhappy with a lot.

We finally settled on a simple bun with two cornrows along the hair line meeting in the back and finished off with heart beads (pink of course!) at the ends.

Sorry for the lighting of the pics. It doesnt show the pink accessories well.

For this style we did a sock bun.

Items needed:
Old sock or stockings
Ouchless pony tail holder
Rat tail comb for parting the cornrows at the hair line
Boar brush for smoothing
Hair accessories
Gel

Here is also another cool way to do a sock bun that I havent tried yet from Mainly Braids For accessories we used a cute light pink flower clip on top and heart beads for the braids.

Mohawk and twists on natural hair for kids

For this month's hair carnival, we were paired up with a partner and both recreated a style from one another. My partner was the wonderful Charlotte over at Charlottes Avenue. This girl has flat twists DOWN! This is the style I chose to recreate. It is a mohawk with twists.

natural hair style ideas for school

Now that summer is over and the kids are going back to school, some parents are pressed for time and do not have such an open schedule for hair anymore. Here are a few styles and tips for back to school.

One quick and simple way is letting them wear their hair out and just dress it up with accessories.

Headbands, barrettes or bows or even out by itself!
I'm pretty sure you all know how much I love protective styles. I know a few do not like to let their child wear their hair out because it becomes a tangled mess by the end of the day. A protective style during school is perfect because it requires less fuss and you can keep it in for days at a time. Even weeks if styles last long on your little one. My favorite types of protective styles are the ones where you can change it after a few days to give it a new look. One I personally love is mohawks! One day you can braid all the braids together like this:

You can portion a few into ponytails or even a braid out before you take it completely out! Possibilities are endless.

summer hair care

Since summer is coming to an end I decided to recap on how we've been styling Leelee's hair. Unfortunately, we didn't do anything memorable this summer and stayed away from the heat. Ever since we participated in BBB protective style challenge before the summer, the protective styles have stuck with us. Prior to the challenge I never braided since I wasn't good at it. Leelee would wear her hair out most of the time and just style as we went out. I was always touching her hair, trying new styles or using rubberbands and ballies. This summer I probably used ballies and beads 2-3x. The majority of the time its been braided up for a few days and then worn out for a couple before being washed. See styles we've been doing here

I highly recommend protective styles and also think its perfect for the summer time. You can do boxbraids or any other style that will last long so that you don't always have to style. If you
always use beads, barettes, ballies or rubberbands it would be a great time to give those ends (hair) a break. Think of it like this: your children get a summer vacation, let their hair get a break, too! Summer is about enjoying yourself and having fun. It shouldn't have to spend too much time on doing hair. Doing a protective style for summer would help lessen the amount of time spent
